The Basics Of Trevarno's Soaps:

The ingredients used to make the base of Trevarno's soaps are Extra Virgin Olive oil, Palm oil, Coconut oil and Cocoa Butter. These oils are combined and included in each soap because of their excellent skin care qualities and the deep cleansing properties they offer. Ingredients Watch: Is Your Skincare Really Natural?

Legally a product needs to only contain 1% of a natural ingredient to be called 'natural'. A large proportion of 'natural' brands in the high street contain as little as one percent of natural ingredients whilst the other remaining ingredients is a cocktail of chemicals.

Under EC legislation all ingredients have to be given their Latin, INCI name (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients). A lot of natural ingredients in their latin names can sound like chemicals so it leaves it confusing to see clearly what is natural and what is not! Some manufacturers use this to disguise or hide the true nature of the ingredients they use.

So how do you tell the difference? Our top tip when looking for products is to look out for the following harsh chemicals on the ingredients list that are commonly lurking in many 'natural' products:

Propylene Glycol: can also be found in anti-freeze. This chemical alters skin structure, allowing other chemicals to penetrate deeper into the skin. It has been linked with skin irritation.

Mineral Oil: This chemical is derived from petroleum & may cause skin discolouration & irritation. Other names include Paraffinum Liquidum, liquid paraffin and baby oil. Mineral oil can commonly be found in creams, oils & baby products.

Parabens: Found in more than 90% of skin care products. Parabens are preservatives that have been linked to hormone disruption, breast cancer and impaired fertility. Labeled under Propylparaben, butylparaben etc .

Soil Association Bans Man-Made Nanoparticles

The organisation stressed that its ban on the use of such materials particularly underlined beauty products, stating that it was taking action 'against this hazardous, potentially toxic technology that poses a serious new threat to human health'.

The ban means that As of January 2008 the organisation will not allow any product containing man-made nano particles to bear its globally recognised certification and labelling, which is pro-organic. The move also makes the Soil Association the first body in the world to take regulatory action against nanoparticles in an effort to 'safeguard the public', ahead of the Government.

"We are deeply concerned at the government's failure to follow scientific advice and regulate products," said Gundula Azeez, Soil Association policy manager. "There should be an immediate freeze on the commercial release of nanomaterials until there is a sound body of scientific research into all the health impacts," Azeez added.

The Soil Association's concerns are related to man-made nanoparticles and are not objecting to natural nanoparticles such as soot produced by volcanoes (life has evolved with these). The association refers to research carried out on behalf of the UK government by the Royal Society and the Academy of Engineering in 2004, which pointed out that nano developed materials should be treated as new chemicals and should be subject to thorough safety testing before being commercially launched.

In a press statement the organisation pointed out that Many well-known companies such as L'Oreal, Unilever, Boots and Lancome are already developing and introducing these super fine particles into their products. However, it also underlined the fact that, none of these products are required to have labelling warning of the potential dangers.

A new study shows that some organic food could be healthier than the non-organic equivalents. An EU funded study is showing that organic fruit and veg has 40% more anti-oxidants and milk up to 60% more antioxidants and healthy fatty acids. The complete results will be issued over the next 12 months. The Food standards Agency has maintained that there is no difference in nutrition in organic and non-organic food.

Animal Testing - is it really necessary?

Sadly almost three million animals are used for experiments in the UK every year and as a result an animal dies in a laboratory somewhere in the UK every 12 seconds (source buav).

Procter & Gamble (P&G) is the world's largest consumer products company with an annual revenue of US$76.476 billion (2007) and their brands include household names such as Ariel, Daz, Fairy, Gillette, Max Factor, Olay, Pantene Pro-V, Pringles, Herbal Essences and Head & Shoulders.

P&G admit that guinea pigs, rabbits, hamsters, ferrets, rats and mice are among the animals used in their product safety research and the company is highly secretive about what actually happens to the animals they sacrifice. They have blinded and poisoned thousands of animals to test deodorants, hair care products, laundry detergents, toothpaste and other products. Apart from pain and injury caused by the chemicals themselves, unfortunately many animals also suffered because of a lack of basic care: (source uncaged.co.uk)

Inside every bottle of Oil Of Olay Complete UV Protection moisturizer is a little bit of nanotech. Not surprisingly P&G are involved in animal testing of nanoparticles. P&G are also pushing for a massive new animal testing programme to assess how poisonous different nanoparticles are. Despite this they continue to claim that animal testing is a last resort (source boycottpandg.co.uk). P&G also carry out Skin irritancy tests including the draize eye test. Ironically P&G also use animal testing for products aimed at animal lovers which has not gone unnoticed by animal welfare groups. Uncaged Campaigns and PETA (people for the ethical treatment of animals) are focusing on P&G's pet food subsidiary Iams. See www.iamscruelty.com.

Uncaged Campaigns first exposed IAMS painful, invasive and lethal experiments on cats, dogs and other animals in 2001. IAMS then suddenly developed a 'Research Policy,' claiming that they would not harm or kill cats and dogs. Uncaged asked IAMS to provide proof that, after 25 years of vivisecting animals, they had genuinely implemented such a policy. Tellingly, IAMS refused to do this, or even answer their searching questions about their so-called 'research policy.'

In March 2003 another nine-month undercover investigation conducted by PETA uncovered harrowing neglect and suffering endured by cats and dogs in IAMS-sponsored experiments. The damning evidence confirmed IAMS' 'research policy' to be nothing more than a sham designed to conceal shocking suffering inflicted on animals in IAMS research. Despite its repeated P.R. claims about being in the forefront of developing alternatives and reducing product testing on animals, P&G's priorities seem clear: P&G has spent more on advertising in less than 5 days, than it claims to have spent in 14 years on alternatives to painful and lethal animal tests. And, while the company claims that it no longer uses dogs in product testing and that it has reduced the number of animals used by 90 percent, it still refuses to back up any of its claims with facts. For example, Procter & Gamble refuses to release to the public information regarding the actual numbers and species of animals used, or the types of tests it forces these animals to endure.

P&G are often quoted as stating: “Sometimes, but only as a last resort, we must conduct research involving animals to ensure materials are safe and effective” and “We are passionate about continuing our progress in developing alternatives to research involving animals.”

Of course these kinds of statements are standard industry spin. As the information on the few website links on this article shows, thousands of animals die at the hands of P&G every year in tests for trivial and totally unnecessary ingredients aimed at improving their profit margin

Please note that everything that either Uncaged Campaigns or PETA has said about IAMS is based on documentary and/or video evidence. Make no mistake, if anything said about IAMS really was untrue or misconstrued, as IAMS would have you believe, they would have been sued and their websites taken down. They haven't.

Campaigners believe purchases of these P&G products provide the funding for their animal testing, and encourage P&G to carry on regardless. But by boycotting these products, you will hit P&G where it hurts – in the pocket. And that this is the best chance of persuading P&G to stop testing on animals.The fact is that more than 600 companies manufacture safe and effective products that are comparable to Procter & Gamble's without testing them on animals. Companies with smaller budgets than P&G have been able to develop alternatives to animals while showing a true commitment to eliminating animal testing. The truth is that P&G could stop all animal testing today without hindering anyone's safety.

For over 100 years the BUAV (British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection) has been campaigning peacefully to create a world where nobody wants or believes we need to experiment on animals. Thanks to persistent campaigning, the BUAV achieved an EU-wide ban on animal testing for cosmetics in 2003. However, it won't come into effect in stages until 2009/2013, the BUAV is now continuing to ensure that this ban is carried through. (source buav) However because there is no world-wide ban, the vast majority of cosmetics products and/or their ingredients sold in the UK will almost certainly have been tested on animals - but the test will have taken place in another country. This demonstrates the need for coherent and co-ordinated legislation on animal experiments across Europe and the rest of the world. (source uncaged.co.uk)

The beauty industry spends £600 million a year marketing its products as pure, simple, organic and natural, but what's the truth behind the hype? Presenter Sarah Beeny wants to find out. First she meets Emma and Charlotte, two beauty-obsessed sisters. Between them they spend almost £1,000 a month on their beauty regime, but they have no idea how many chemicals are in their favourite products or whether these could be damaging their health.

Sarah has the girls tested, and with the help of two experts, is able to reveal the chemicals being stored in their bodies and then shows them how to detox by removing chemicals from their lives. Then Sarah meets two young mums to see whether the chemicals in the products they use are being passed on to their babies, before taking to the streets to find out whether parents really know what's in the special baby products they are buying.

Whilst we are enjoying the last glimpse of the glorious (unpredictable!) english sunshine before autumn begins we thought we would highlight Skin Deep’s recent Safety Investigation on sunscreens.

Skin Deep is a safety guide to nearly 25,000 cosmetics and personal care products brought to you by researchers at the Environmental Working Group in the US.

Skin Deep lets consumers learn what chemicals are in their soap, shampoo, toothpaste and other products and provides product rankings of known and probable health hazards associated with ingredients in each of the products assessed because the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) doesn't require companies to test their own products for safety.

Six Weeks Without A Wash!

Nicky Taylor went to extreme measures last night in the BBC3 programme "how dirty can i get" to avoid nasty chemicals such as parabens found in skincare.

After reading the labels of beauty products she used, she worked out she was applying more than 200 different chemicals to her body each day. She adds: "These are said to be safe, but what is not known is the effect that the 'cocktail' of chemicals is having on our bodies. With the incidence of diseases such as breast cancer on the rise, it's difficult not to wonder if these products could partly be to blame. Health campaigners are particularly worried about a group of chemicals called parabens, which are added to cosmetics to prevent them from degrading."

So over the past six weeks, Nicky, 42, cut out her daily skincare routine, and all the products associated with it, out of her life altogether. For 40 days and 40 nights, there was no showering, no hair washing, no teeth cleaning and no deodorant.

She really should have just came to The Natural Beauty Shop instead, hehe! You have to admire her though, it was quite interesting to watch. Including learning that the level of parabens found in the body can be measured in human urine, eek!

The Launch!!

A big thank you for all that attended our launch party at The Natural Beauty Shop in Boscombe, Bournemouth.

Although we officially opened late june we were just so busy with the set up that we didn’t have a chance to have a nice get together with a few glasses of wine (organic ofcourse!) & nibbles.

We decided rather than miss out we would have a better late than never launch on Friday 17^th August instead and we are so glad we did as it was a great night as you can see from the pictures below.

With thanks to The International Café for the yummie canopes ( You can find them just across the road from us at The Natural Beauty Shop – they make really fresh food that is delicious!)
